Have you ever received a last minute invitation to an event, maybe a birthday party? If you had known sooner, you might have been able to go to the party or get a more meaningful gift. If it was a party that you really wanted…

Have you ever received a last minute invitation to an event, maybe a birthday party? If you had known sooner, you might have been able to go to the party or get a more meaningful gift. If it was a party that you really wanted to go to, not having enough notice can leave a frustrating, yet embarrassing feeling. Or perhaps, maybe you’ve been on the receiving end of a Chia Pet that was bought at the Walgreens on your street corner by someone on the way to your party? Think back…did you give that person enough notice to get you something other than a Chia Pet?

The same type of thing tends to happen to lower tier subcontractors within the bidding process. A client calls and requests a number. It’s needed by 4:00pm TODAY. It’s 11:30am right now and you’re headed out the door for lunch with a potential client. After that, you have a meeting with your banker. It’s going to be impossible to give a competitive number on such short notice and with no additional information. What do you do?

Midwest Hauling loves animals, but not necessarily a Chia Pet. We prefer to drive a job and check out the details before giving a client a quote. MapQuest and Google Maps aren’t always correct in showing the truck routes or the light-weight bridges that can’t be crossed with heavy trucks. The customer isn’t always aware that a certain quarry’s material doesn’t meet a certain specification, or that a certain truck’s height can’t be loaded with their available equipment. It is difficult on a few day’s notice, to drive a job and follow up with questions. Midwest always prefers to communicate with the customer and ask questions or offer suggestions prior to submitting any quotes. A “Save the Date” reminder is always helpful and greatly appreciated.

A new initiative is about to author in major changes to the hauling world. It relates directly to how carriers and drivers deal with trucking safety issues. Harsh fines, forced development and implementation of corrective action plans, or even all out shut downs could be instituted for a rating of “unfit”. Drivers will be evaluated and a safety profile for each one will be developed.

CSA2010 simply stands for Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010. It was initiated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to be effective in 2010. The goal is to reduce large truck and bus crashes, injuries and fatalities. A priority for FMCSA is to identify drivers and carriers that pose safety risks and it gives the organization the authority to intervene in high risk cases. This is an expansion from monitoring carriers to being able to directly affect drivers and to intervene to change behavior earlier. Now each DRIVER will have a safety rating, not JUST the carrier.

ALL carriers will be assigned a safety rating. Drivers will now be responsible for their own personal safety profile. This profile will follow the driver from company to company he or she drives for. The profile will be a key part of both the carrier’s and the carrier’s insurance company’s evaluation process…not to mention intricate to the driver hiring policy.

There are over 1000 potential violations in 7 basic categories! The program is currently being tested in Missouri, amongst other states. Full nationwide implementation is slated for January 2011. The point system being used for licensing will be tremendously influenced.

For greater information on this far reaching law, please contact us at Midwest Hauling. We work diligently to stay on top of these changes, as well as others. We would be glad to help our clients get all the information necessary. We hope you’ll use this criteria when evaluating the hauler you would choose to use. We strive to meet all the requirements on behalf of our clients.

In this day and age, loyalty is a dying virtue. As everyone chases the almighty dollar at any expense, truly getting the benefits of a consistent business relationship is disappearing. By partnering with your subcontractor, you can shape their performance to your preference, secure the best pricing and have a personal connection with the company. All of these features translate into more profitable projects. Fewer issues arise and there can be deeper involvement on the front end, as opposed to simply throwing a number at you. Fewer and fewer haulers are truly caring about their clients and look at each order as an adversarial arrangement.

In spite of this climate, there are some who deeply respect and value their clients; not as a marketing statement, but actually feel these emotions in their gut. They go the extra mile and put the best product forward for their customers. They sell loyalty and hope for it in return. It’s these type of business relationships that will eventually win out over those of lesser integrity or diligence. These subcontractors might not always be the cheapest but they are, by far, the most economical. We take satisfaction of our place in the hauling industry. We hope our clients will take advantage of this philosophy. We live it!

As we enter the hottest days of summer, the pressure is on to perform in difficult conditions. Soaring temperatures, surprise storms and compressing schedules are just a few of the issues that hit this time of year. Haulers will be stretched thin as equipment suffers from the excessive heat. A huge obstacle in being an effective hauler is keeping the equipment up and running. This takes both planning and quick thinking.

The first requirement is to have a rigorous and preventive maintenance schedule performed by qualified mechanics. This can head off some pending problems. Secondly, good reactive road service is imperative; many times averting extended delays. Lastly, a contingency plan that secures back up units. It certainly helps to have newer equipment to lower the percentage of chance that an issue may arise.

Hauling customers need the trucks to show up on time, in good repair and capable of performing the work. An equipment failure can happen, but if it turns into a pattern, it becomes customer failure… Something that is just not acceptable at Midwest Hauling. We take care of the gear and the driver; giving clients the best chance at hauling success and schedule protection.

What is truly meant by the phrases “staying power” or “the strong will survive”?

We seem to be hearing things of this nature more and more often these days. It can be uneasy to hear the stories being told by one company about another. It has to make it difficult for the customer to decide what the safest, most professional choice will be. Companies that manage themselves well and perform professionally over an extended period of time are always the best choice. Companies that pass rumors, gossip and scuttlebutt about competitors can pose potential and serious risks. Firms that make the sacrifice to keep a high level of service never seem to be the subject of such scuttlebutt.

Spending the capital to serve customer’s needs by having a live person answer the phone, staying abreast of safety and insurance regualtions, expanding in tangent markets (ie: Southeast Missouri), adding or changing equipment (ie: end dumps) and ownership involvement are indicators of a company committed to integrity and customer service.

As we enter our 30th year, Midwest Hauling takes great pride in being the definition of “staying power” and “the strong will survive”.
